ATLs: I will develop the research skills by evaluating and analyzing the content of primary sources in order to identify if they are reliable and credible. I will also develop my communication ATLs by interacting with an expert on swimming to gather information for my swimming tutorials.
Subject: This process journal will show the analysis of three primary resources and break down whether they are useful, credible, and relevant.
Title of Source 1: David A. Cox Final Cut Pro Tutorial
MLA Citation: "Final Cut Pro X Tutorial." YouTube, uploaded by David A. Cox, 5 Sept. 2015, www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7-zZkHJHas. Accessed 29 Oct. 2017.
Information Found and How It Will Be Used: In this video, David A. Cox gives an extensive tutorial on how to use Final Cut Pro, an editing software program. I will utilize this program to edit my videos during Personal Project; watching this video familiarized myself with the software and let me test it out for the first time. With the information in the video, I was also able to grasp the differences between iMovie (the editor I formerly used) and Final Cut Pro.
Origin: This video was posted on David A. Cox’s YouTube channel in September 2015. Cox is a professional technology teacher who is also the CEO of Tech Talk America. Cox is a specialist in the field of Apple technology, so he is qualified to provide expertise on Final Cut Pro, as it is a program exclusive to Apple hardware. Cox’s channel has been highly successful, with over 50 million views and 500,000 subscribers.
Purpose: The purpose of Cox's channel is to provide basic tutorials and reviews of commonly used technology products. Though the Cox’s main goal is to teach how to use technology, he also uses the YouTube channel for financial purposes, as he earns money from the advertisements and monetization on his videos. In this specific video, Cox gives a basic guide of how to work Final Cut Pro. He also has an extension video for advanced usage of the program; I will probably use this tutorial once I become more familiar with the software in the coming months.
Value: The channel is very valuable because Cox is an experienced and reliable source. Cox’s “about” page on YouTube shows that he is qualified to teach technology, and has developed a trustworthy YouTube channel. His tutorials are usually simple, patient, and comprehensive; this makes his tutorials a lot better than other faster-paced and less comprehensive ones. In his Final Cut Pro tutorial, Cox provides a screencast demonstrating what he is explaining in the video, which makes the video highly interactive.
Limitation: One flaw in this video is that Cox could keep the video more concise, as he spends too much time over-explaining some aspects that are very simple and do not require excess explanation. There is also the possible limitation that Cox has an inherent bias towards Apple products, as his channel only reviews the products of this specific tech company.

Title of Source 2: Cody Miller YouTube Channel
MLA Citation: "Cody Miller." YouTube, uploaded by Cody Miller, 11 April 2011, www.youtube.com/channel/UCKXStBewRPJrSgbzhMB2GWQ. Accessed 17 Oct. 2017.
Information Found and How It Will Be Used: Cody Miller’s YouTube channel provides weekly videos that are related to the topic of swimming. The primary style of video he posts are vlogs. His YouTube channel is highly useful for my project due to the fact that it provides a concept to base my own YouTube channel off of. I can also observe things such as effective video titling, “thumbnailing”, and channel art from Miller's channel.
Origin: Cody Miller’s YouTube channel was created in April 2011, but he actually started to regularly post content in the summer of 2017. The subscriber count of the channel is steadily growing, but number of subscribers definitely indicates that he has a lesser known YouTube channel. Cody Miller himself is an Olympic gold medalist in swimming for the USA and is endorsed by companies like GoPro, TYR, and Nike.
Purpose: The aim of the channel is to post video blogs and swimming-related content on YouTube for both entertainment and profit purposes. Clearly, the main goal of posting weekly content is to entertain the YouTube viewers. However, since YouTube has become a profitable platform in recent years, YouTubers like Miller monetize content to earn money off YouTube. Regardless, it is also worth mentioning that Miller produces and shares these videos due to the fact that he is a cinematography enthusiast, and he frequently discusses his passion for cinematography in his videos.
Value: Cody Miller’s YouTube channel is a great source of inspiration for the vlogs I will make for my channel because he makes vlogs about the effect of swimming on his life. The fact that Miller is an Olympic medalist in swimming makes him even more credible as a person to discuss how swimming affects his day to day activities.
Limitation: Considering the purpose of the channel, it has few limitations. The single problem would be that the editing of some videos is occasionally sloppy. For instance, music and footage do not always match, or there are too many vocalized pauses when he is speaking.

Title of Source 3: Expert Interview with Merve Senol
MLA Citation: Senol, Merve. Interview. 18 Nov. 2017.
Information Found and How It Will Be Used: In my interview with my swim coach, Merve Senol, I was able to collect lots of information regarding swim techniques. This will be very useful for when I create my swimming tutorials.
Origin: Merve Senol is the head swim coach at the Istanbul Technical University and has also been a coach for the Turkish National Swim Team since 2016. In regards to education, Merve studied at the sports faculty of Maltepe University, a considerably well-known university in Turkey. She has been coaching for about 10 years. This background indicates she is reliable in regards to the topic of swimming. I trust that whatever she teaches me concerning swim techniques are very accurate.
Purpose: The purpose of interviewing coach Merve was for me to gain more knowledge on swim techniques, as I will be making swim tutorials as part of my final outcome . Since I do not want to post unreliable videos on my channel that teach swim techniques falsely, collecting information from a credible source like coach Merve makes sense. Later on, when I complete my tutorials, I will meet with my coach again to receive critiquing and grading on these videos. (Her feedback is available in entry 9)
Value: The interview was not only valuable because the information was coming from a reliable source, but because it was an engaging interview. As I conducted the interview after my swim training, I was right by the pool and prepared to practice whatever my coach explained to me. If I demonstrated that I could swim the technique accurately, my coach approved it. When I could not prove I could swim the technique properly, my coach would re-explain what I needed to do. The fact that I got to try out what was being explained to me definitely gave me a full of understanding of each stroke's technique. Once the interview was over, I felt as though I mastered the technical intricacies of every stroke. Subsequently, I can provide proper technical footage in my tutorials.
Limitation: Though this was not a limitation in the grand scheme of things, the fact that my swim coach did not know how to speak English could have posed a problem during the interview. However, since I can speak Turkish fluently, this problem was resolved and I was able to conduct the interview without any further issues.
