ATLs: I will develop the research skills by evaluating and analyzing the content of secondary sources in order to identify if they are reliable, credible, and relevant to my research.
Subject: This process journal will show the analysis of two secondary resources and break down whether they are useful, credible, and relevant.
Title of Source 1: Empire Online Article on Camera Angles
MLA Citation: Freer, Ian. "Film Studies 101: The 30 Camera Shots Every Film Fan Needs To Know." Empire Online, Bauer Media Group, 16 Dec. 2017, www.empireonline.com/movies/features/film-studies-101-camera-shots-styles/. Accessed 30 Oct. 2017.
Information Found and How It Will Be Used: This source discusses a specific cinematographic element–angles. The proper use of angles in my videos will be critical because good cinematography improves the general quality of videos and make them seem more professional.
Origin: This article comes from a monthly British film magazine named the Empire. The article is written by Ian Freer, and the article was initially published in December 2013. The magazine, Empire, belongs to a British media Group called Bauer. Empire has been in circulation since 1989 and is considerably prominent in the film world. In fact, it sells an average of 2 million copies annually. The author Ian Freer is currently the assistant director of Empire and has been a senior movie reviewer for more than 25 years.
Purpose: The intention of the article is to identify the significance of camera shots in video production. Freer discusses that many times it is taken for granted how directors manipulate the camera to develop the storyline of the movie. Thus, Freer discusses the 30 most-used video angles in cinematography and the empirical evidence proving the beneficial effect of video angles. To put it simply, the purpose of the article is analyzing the how angles enhance the video content quality.
Value: The first value of this source is the credibility of the author, Ian Freer. Freer has studied cinema for many years and has become a an established film critic. This article is also increasingly valuable because the writer embeds a video clip to provide a visual demonstration of the angle being discussed. For instance, when explaining the dutch tilt, the author embeds a scene from Frankenstein that displays this angle being used accurately and well. After seeing the clip, I quickly understood that the dutch tilt is a lopsided angle that gives scenes a feeling of strangeness or eccentricity.
Limitation: A small problem with this article is that it has failed to be updated effectively. Many of the video clips embedded throughout the article are no longer available on YouTube, and this prevents readers from seeing a visual example of the angle. Without a visual example, it is difficult to properly grasp the technique of the discussed angle.
