Date of Entry: December 10, 2017
Section: Planning
ATLs: I am demonstrating effective critical thinking skills as my criteria/specifications plan for ways to achieve my goal, identifies my targets, and provides an outline for the steps required to make a successful project.
Subject: In this entry I explain why the criteria/specifications are valid, how I will test the criteria, and how the results from my test can indicate or determine success in the product.
Content: Listed in this process journal are the seven success specifications also seen in the Planning section.
Note: Templates of all the surveys and rubrics mentioned in the success specifications can be found as files at the bottom of the page. The answered version of these surveys and rubrics are linked throughout the process journal.
1. My vlogs must be entertaining and interesting for viewers
Why: Vlogs are increasingly popular among secondary students (teenagers) because they are engaging and fast-paced, and account for their shortening attention span (Maybin, 2017). The popularity of vlogs among teenagers makes them my target audience for this video style, and means I will have make sure my content is entertaining and interesting for their attention spans.
How: I will make sure my videos are fast-paced and maintain the viewers attention. I will ask a panel of 3 teachers and 7 students to provide feedback on how entertaining my vlogs are and to answer a survey that evaluates how entertaining and interesting the vlogs are.
Success indicator: If I receive an average score that is above 7.0 on the scales for how interesting and how entertaining my videos are, then I will have succeeded. Then, the written feedback will give me a more specific evaluation and point on the exact areas of improvement for my videos.
2. My website and videos must successfully motivate students to maintain healthier lifestyle.
Why: My chosen global context (identities and relationships) studies the concept of who we are. An aspect of this global context is the idea of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Thus, it is vital to ensure that my website and videos urge students to live more healthy lifestyles.
How: I will assemble a focus group composed of three students and will ask them to discuss their opinions on the videos and websites after evaluating them for about 60 minutes (two lunch breaks). After they have evaluated my videos and website, I will have them assess a rubric that analyzes whether this specification is fulfilled.
Success Indicator: I will know that my videos and website are successful if I score above an average of 9.0 out of 12.0 on the rubric. Additionally, I will be able to understand the success of my website and videos by analyzing the comments made by members of the focus group. If the comments are primarily positive and indicate that the students are encourage to live healthier lifestyles, then I have succeeded.
3. My channel must reach 1000 views on its videos collectively (circa 140 per video).
Why: This criterion is an effective way of measuring whether my videos are able to circulate well on the YouTube platform.
How: I will initially promote my channel through social media, which will spread it in my own circles. However, I will also ask for the support of one of my experts, Mr. Carlson, to help promote my video on his social media since he has a considerably large following.
Success Indicator: I will have succeeded in fulfilling this criteria if my channel reaches 1000 views by the end of April 2018.
4. The videos on my channel must have good audio quality and high resolution
Why: Having good audio quality and high resolution improve viewer's experience when watching my videos.
How: I will meet with one of my experts, Mr. Carlson, as he has prior experience editing for televised programs and is generally very capable with video production technology. With his expertise, he will determine if I achieve this criteria and provide useful feedback. I will give him a rubric to fill in so that my success in this specification can be measured quantitively.
Success Indicator: I will know that my videos are successful if the sum of the points on my rubric are above 9.0 on the rubric. Furthermore, I will be able to evaluate the success based on the verbal commentary provided by Mr. Carlson. If I am successful, I should be aiming for him to primarily praise my videos
5. All of the videos on my channel should effectively incorporate cinematographic techniques. This includes transitions, camera angles and other important aspects of editing.
Why: Cinematographic techniques are used throughout videos to create a more professional presentation of the content. Angles, for instance, improve the experience of the viewer and enhance the enjoyability of the videos. Editing is just as important. The subject of a video can be extremely creative, but if the editing is sloppy, then the video will not be cohesive and the audience will be disinterested.
How: As part of the rubric from specification 4, I will insert a criterion that asks Mr. Carlson whether cinematographic techniques have been implemented well in the video. This criterion will be worth 4 points and his score will determine my success in incorporating good cinematography.
Success Indicator: Scoring at least 3 out of 4 marks on this criterion will indicate that I have succeeded in this success specification.
6. The techniques and other important information provided in my swimming tutorials should be proper and correct.
Why: My tutorials should be teaching viewers the correct ways to swim, otherwise the point of the tutorial is lost. I would not want to teach viewers wrong methods of swimming.
How: I will ensure the achievement of this goal by showing every tutorial to my swim coach who I previously interviewed her during the research phase. I will ask her to critique and provide feedback on my tutorials so that she can answer a rubric that measures my success.
Success Indicator: I will know that my tutorials are successful if my coach approves the content according to the rubric I will have provided. Receiving at least a 3 out of 4 on my rubric for each tutorial will mean I succeeded.
7. Each of the “healthy eating” recipes on my website must be of a high quality
Why: My recipes must taste good because I want to advertise my recipes as both healthy and tasty. The point is to encourage people to eat healthier, and providing recipes that taste bad will further discourage people to eat healthy.
How: I will have my 8 recipes tasted by a panel of four judges. For the sake of practicality, each panel member will provide feedback for only 4 dishes on a survey. On the survey they will give written feedback, as well as a rating for taste out of 10. It makes sense to compose a panel consisting of both 2 students and 2 adults because my dishes will be served to both these crowds at the Personal Project exhibition. Each dish will be evaluated by one adult and one student.
Success Indicator: If 5 ranks as ‘Needs Improvement’ on the survey, any dish that receives at least 7 or above would be a successful dish. Thus, if a dish receives least 7, it can be added to the mini-recipe book on my website.
